The Commission engaged the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) to identify where falls occur, how age relates to the risk of falling and where costs lie. This report is informing the development of the programme and priorities within it.
Carmela Petagna, Senior Portfolio Manager, commends the NZIER report to DHB decision-makers. She says, “We encourage you to refer to the NZIER report as you allocate resources in your planning process. Based on figures for accepted ACC claims in 2010/2011, in relation to DHB inpatient falls, the magnitude of falls with harm is five times greater in aged residential care settings, and nearly twenty times greater in the community. This is the reason the programme approach looks beyond inpatient falls to ask what interventions will be effective – and cost-effective – in which settings”.
